When I first started building/designing websites back in 2006, I had the impression that the term “Web Designer” could cover everything from PHP to HTML to pure Design work (Fireworks, Illustrator, Photoshop).
Luckily, by following the right people, who with their articles and talks define the web of tomorrow, I got a solid understanding of who’s-doing-what in the industry. Today we’re going to focus on the infamous Front-End Developer.

It’s been some months I keep getting more and more calls from recruiters for Drupal Developer positions. It seems Drupal is THE CMS of the year, specifically with it’s seventh release on its way.
Drupal is a Content Management System created by Dries Buytaert, a student from Antwerp. It’s first version was put online by Dries himself in January 2001. Drupal is being used by insistutions and companies around the world: The White House, SUN, IBM, Greenpeace, Novell, Yahoo!, Fedex, Nike, Forbes.. And the list goes on.
The Drupal community website, is undergoing redesign, and hopefully it will be soon online. (I’m not a big fan of the current portal design-wise and functionalities-wise).
Business-wise, there has been lots of discussion about Drupal Certifications, but the Drupal Association says it does not have the resources to organise such a thing, and prefers to leave third-party companies do it.
The new Internet Explorer 9, which is going beta in the following days, will support if not all, a big part of CSS3 modules. It will also support several HTML5 elements. Even if test results publiced by Microsoft have been criticized as been not exactly “accurate”, they definitely show Microsoft change in policy towards CSS3 and Web Standards in general.
Microsoft was the last company to join a growing list of giants evangelizing Web Standards: Google, Opera and last but not least: Apple.
